Preconception Counseling FAQ's

  • What is preconception counseling?

Preconception counseling is an appointment with your healthcare provider that is used to plan for a future pregnancy.  The goal of pre-conception counseling is to optimize your health prior to pregnancy in effort to reduce adverse pregnancy events. This is done by identifying if you have any medical conditions, are taking any medications, or are partaking in any activities which can negatively impact a pregnancy.   Our team will provide treatment options and information before conception to improve your health and to help reduce the risk to your future baby.  This appointment is an important part of a planned and healthy pregnancy.

  • What can I expect during a preconception counseling appointment?

At your preconception counseling visit, you can expect for our team to review various topics including your medical and surgical history, family history, past obstetric history, risk factors, and lifestyle. We will review your current list of prescription and non-prescription medications along with vaccination history.  As part of a thorough evaluation, we may recommend a physical exam and/or lab work.  If you have any medical conditions that require the help of a specialist, a referral to that specialist may ordered.  Your provider may also discuss how to chart to your menstrual cycles so you know when you ovulate each month. You may be given a fertility bag which includes prenatal vitamins, vitamins for your partner, and fertility-safe lubrication.

  • When should I schedule a preconception counseling appointment?

It is recommended that a woman have a preconception counseling appointment as soon as they are contemplating having a child. Ideally, this occurs at least 3 to 6 months before actual attempts are made to conceive.  This time frame allows a woman to better prepare her body for successful conception and pregnancy, and allows her to reduce any health risks which are within her control.

  • Will any preconception testing be performed?

After gathering a complete history on you and your partner, our providers may suggest genetic carrier testing, immunization testing, or fertility testing for one or both partners. Results from these tests can provide invaluable information which can be helpful to our team regarding your future pregnancy.

  • What else can I do to prepare my body for pregnancy?

Women who want to become pregnant should start prenatal vitamins at least 3 months prior to desired pregnancy. Additionally, achieving a healthy weight prior to pregnancy is recommended, as an abnormally high or low body-mass index (BMI) is associated with infertility and maternal/fetal pregnancy complications. Regular exercise (at least 3 times per week) is important along with adequate hydration and healthy food choices. Establishing a nutritious diet before you are pregnant can help you maintain good eating habits throughout your pregnancy.
