Pediatric Gynecology FAQ's

  • What is pediatric gynecology?

Pediatric gynecology focuses on conditions of the breasts, uterus, ovaries, vagina, and vulva in children. As a Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecologist, Dr. Worley has significant experience in caring for children with gynecologic concerns/problems.

  • What gynecologic conditions in children are able to be addressed?

Dr. Worley provides comprehensive evaluation and specialized treatment for gynecological conditions in children as young as a few months old. When needed, she works closely with experts from other clinics to provide the best care possible. She is experienced in a broad range of gynecologic conditions affecting children, including:

    • vaginitis and vulvovaginitis
    • skin conditions of the vulva
    • labial adhesions
    • abnormal vaginal discharge
    • foreign objects in the vagina
    • early puberty
    • ovarian cysts and tumors
    • congenital anomalies of the reproductive system (Mullerian issues, imperforate hymen, vaginal septum)
    • differences in sex development
    • urinary tract infection (UTI)
    • HPV vaccination
  • Does my child need a pelvic exam?

In children, a pelvic examination is not typically required. An external exam is usually sufficient and allows the physician to assess hygiene issues and any abnormalities of the vulva, introitus, and perineum. If there is concern for a foreign object or there are symptoms suggestive of a genital tract, pelvic, urologic, or rectal issue, Dr. Worley has pediatric instruments available for use. All examinations are performed with parental consent and in their presence, and in a comfortable, modest, and empowering manner.
