Labor & Delivery FAQ's

  • What hospital should I go to?

In order to ensure quality medical staff are caring for patients, all physicians and medical providers must undergo application, review, and acceptance in order to have “privileges” at a hospital.  Most medical professionals are affiliated with only one or two hospitals based on region. Our providers a have hospital privileges within the central Florida AdventHealth hospital system. While this system includes seven hospital campuses, due to location, our team only performs surgeries and deliveries at Winter Park and in special circumstances, Altamonte Hospital and Orlando South. Our primary campus is Winter Park and patients who have prenatal care with us should commit to delivering at Winter Park Hospital unless otherwise discussed in advance.

  • What do I do if my water breaks, I think I am in labor, or something else is wrong?

The office is not the best location to handle certain medical situations.  If you are having regular, painful contractions or think that your water has broken, you should proceed immediately to Winter Park Hospital. Once you arrive, you should go to Labor & Delivery triage for evaluation and let them who that you are our patient. You will be seen by one of our trusted colleagues who is an OB Hospitalist. They are all board-certified OBGYN physicians who are well-trained and highly trusted by our team. If you require admission to the hospital or are experiencing a serious medical problem, your physician will be immediately called.

  • What if I have a complication and need to be admitted to the hospital?

While we all hope that every pregnancy is smooth and straight forward, pregnancy can be unpredictable and complications do occur which may require observation and treatment in the hospital.  Examples may include severe nausea & vomiting of pregnancy, infections such as the flu or in the kidneys, breaking your water long before your due date, significant vaginal bleeding, preterm labor, a fall or motor vehicle accident, elevated blood pressure, etc. If you require admission to the hospital for something other than delivery (known as antepartum admission), your physician will be with you every step of the way.  They will see you daily and be the primary person involved in your care.  If additional specialists are needed, our team will see to it that consultations are arranged promptly.

  • Will I be able to have a vaginal delivery or will I need a c-section?

The goal for all pregnancies with our team is a vaginal delivery.  Our office is one of the only practices in the area that promotes and routinely performs vaginal birth after c-section (VBAC) deliveries.  We also boast the lowest c-section rate in the central Florida AdventHealth hospital system. Dr. Worley and Dr. Silva are also skilled at operative (vacuum) deliveries as well which helps to minimize the need for a c-section. When a c-section is needed, however, their surgical technique is stellar and patients are left with small incisions that afford them faster recoveries.

  • What if my baby is breech or I am pregnant with twins?

Dr. Worley and Dr. Silva have experience in complex deliveries. Following recommendations by the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists, they deliver twins vaginally (if the first one is head down) and also offer the option of an external cephalic version for singleton breech babies. This procedure attempts to turn the fetus back to a head-down position, which increases the chance that you can still have a vaginal birth.

  • Will my doctor and the hospital support my birth plan?

While safety is our number one priority, our team recognizes that all pregnancies are different and we strive to provide the most individualized care for every patient, including use of a doula and/or a birth plan. Labor & Delivery services at Winter Park Hospital are supported by a team of caring staff in private birthing suits. The staff with work with you to create a customized birthing experience that meets your desires and needs. From tours and birth plans to special packages, the hospital will support your growing family every step of the way.

  • What are my options for pain management during labor?

Pain is one of the biggest concerns for pregnant women.  Winter Park Hospital offers a variety of pain management options to suit your needs.  Ranging from meditation and relaxation techniques to IV pain medication and epidurals, our team will ensure that you receive access to all options at all times during your labor and delivery stay.

  • Will my doctor be at my delivery?

Yes!  One of the benefits of a small, intimate practice like Alliance Obstetrics & Gynecology Group is the one-on-one care you receive.  This care is not only during pregnancy but during delivery as well.  Dr. Worley and Dr. Silva are committed to being there for each of their patient's deliveries as a trusted professional, supporter, and friend.  Our providers do not participate in extended call groups so evenings, weekends, and holidays only Alliance Obstetrics & Gynecology Group providers are caring for our patients!

  • What happens after delivery?

Whether you deliver vaginally or by c-section, if the baby is term and stable, our team and Winter Park Hospital encourage immediate skin-to-skin contact between you. Skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth has been shown to facilitate attachment, support optimal brain development, and promote respiratory, temperature, and glucose self-regulation in the baby. It also decreases crying and stress in the newborn.  During the immediate two hours following birth of your baby, the pediatric team will check on the baby and the labor team will continue to provide care to you and baby as well. Lactation support is also offered.  Once fully recovered, mothers and babies are transferred to the Mother Baby Unit.  "Rooming in" is standard at Winter Park Hospital thus mother and baby separation is minimal, if at all.  In the event of baby needing NICU admission, mothers and fathers have full access to be with baby as much as possible.  Each day during your postpartum recovery, our providers will make rounds to check on you and your progress.  A hospital pediatrician will do the same for your baby. Lactation consultants will be available as well as newborn photography services. Typically, mothers spend between one and two nights in the hospital following a vaginal delivery and two to three nights in the hospital following a c-section. Once cleared for discharge, your physician will provide you with all the instructions, support, and follow up information you may need.
