Urinary incontinence refers to the involuntary leakage of urine. This can range from leaking just a few drops of urine to completely emptying the bladder unintentionally. Urinary incontinence can occur at any time in a person’s life, but the prevalence of this problem increases with age. About 25% of young women, 50% of middle-aged women, and 75% of older women experience incontinence.
Urinary incontinence can be caused by various things such as urinary tract infections, certain medications, pelvic floor dysfunction, nerve injuries, and anatomical changes. Two of the most common causes, however, include pregnancy/childbirth and menopause. The physicians at Alliance Obstetrics & Gynecology Group will obtain a history and perform a thorough exam to determine the cause of your incontinence and help guide you in creating the most appropriate treatment plan.
Treatment of urinary incontinence is dependent on the type of incontinence you have and what additional factors may be causing your incontinence. Treatments may include lifestyle changes, bladder training, physical therapy, medication, use of bladder support devices, and surgery. Often, several treatments are used together for the best effect.
