Infertility Consultation FAQ's

  • How is infertility evaluated?

Dr. Worley and Dr. Silva start your workup with an individualized plan based on your history and symptoms to try to find the reason why you and your partner have not conceived. Some of the tests which may be recommended include:

    • blood tests: There are several hormones that are vital to the normal functioning of the reproductive system.  There are also many conditions that can disturb the natural balance of these hormones.  Through the use of blood tests, we can measure the amounts of hormones to detect if there is a problem.
    • ultrasound: By using sound waves to create a picture, an ultrasound can confirm the size, shape, and position of the reproductive organs as well as indicate such problems as uterine fibroids, adhesions, cysts, or decreased ovarian reserve.
    • endometrial biopsy: A sample of the uterine lining (endometrium) is obtained using a small catheter. The tissue sample obtained is sent for analysis to rule out infection or inflammation.
    • hysterosalpingogram (HSG): To detect if there are blockages in the fallopian tubes, a uterine septum, or other intrauterine abnormalities, x-ray contrast is injected into the uterus and monitored as it progresses through the reproductive tract.
    • hysteroscopy: A minimally invasive procedure where a camera is inserted into the uterus to focus on the interior.
    • laparoscopy: A minimally invasive procedure where a camera and specialized instruments are inserted into the pelvis through very small incisions in the abdomen in order to evaluate the exterior of the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and pelvis.
    • semen analysis: A lab test that examines a sample of semen under a microscope to evaluate the sperm count, movement, and shape.
  • How long does an infertility evaluation take?

Typically, all results can be obtained within 1 or 2 menstrual cycles.

  • Is infertility testing covered by insurance?

Some insurance companies may cover the cost of infertility testing, while others do not.  It depends upon your individual benefits under your healthcare plan.  It is a good idea to call your insurance company to find out before you start your evaluation.

  • Do I need a reproductive endocrinologist or infertility specialist?

Alliance Obstetrics & Gynecology provides a variety of fertility testing procedures in our office. For any services which are not performed in-house, we have trusted specialists we work closely with to complete your evaluation.
