The external female genitalia includes two set of labia -- the outer labia majora and the inner labia minora. Due to genetics, childbirth, and aging, in many women, the labia minora are excessively elongated and protrude further than the labia majora. Medical professionals refer to this condition as labial hypertrophy.
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure designed to skillfully reshape or reduce protruding labia minora. The goal is to improve appearance, function, and hygiene of the external genitalia. It is performed by surgeons trained in the meticulous closure of skin in delicate areas to avoid visible scars, irregularities, or altered sensitivities. The resulting labia shape is natural and more comfortable.
Many women shave or wax the bikini area and are conscious about looking neat and trim. Some women dislike the size, shape, or proportion of their labia. Some are bothered by asymmetry or a change in length or texture following childbirth or menopause. Others experience rubbing and discomfort during activity, exercise, or intercourse. The goal of labiaplasty is to restore confidence and comfort to women with labia that bother them. Each labiaplasty is customized to achieve the individual woman's desired result and needs. If the appearance of your labia bothers you or if your labia cause you discomfort, labiaplasty by Dr. Worley may be right for you.
Correction of asymmetry or redundancy of the labia minora can help women feel more comfortable in their clothing, decrease rubbing during activity and intercourse, reduce infections, resolve hygiene concerns, and improve self-esteem and confidence.
Dr. Worley offers labiaplasty within the comfort and privacy of the office. Performed using local anesthesia, the procedure takes 30 to 60 minutes to complete. Dr. Worley uses a V-wedge technique to minimize incision lines and maintain the tissue's natural appearance and contour. She uses only dissolving sutures (stitches) and there are no drains or bandages needed. A mild sedative may be prescribed if desired.
Complications of labiaplasty are rare but may include bleeding, infection, or excess/uneven removal of tissue resulting in discomfort or asymmetry.
Patients are able to shower the same day and are recommended to ice the area and recline for the first 24 hours to prevent swelling or bruising. Anti-inflammatory medications are typically all that are needed. A mild pain medication may also be prescribed. Most women are able to resume normal, light activities in a few days. Vigorous exercise and sexual intercourse can be resumed in 4 weeks. Dr. Worley will typically schedule a postoperative visit with you within 4 weeks.
Intimate rejuvenation is within reach for a modest cost at Alliance Obstetrics & Gynecology. While many surgeons charge $2,400 to $4,500 for labiaplasty, by eliminating costing anesthesia and hospital fees, Dr. Worley is able to keep the cost of the procedure surprisingly low. The approximate cost is $1,250.
Typically, labiaplasty is considered cosmetic and elective. Sometimes certain medical issues resulting from labial hypertrophy are enough to have your insurance company cover the cost of the procedure. After a thorough examination and discussion of your individual concerns, Dr. Worley can request insurance authorization if appropriate.
If you're experiencing labial irregularities and want to know if labiaplasty can help, schedule a consultation with Dr. Worley at Alliance Obstetrics & Gynecology and The Center for Pediatric & Adolescent Gynecology.
