What is LGBTQIA+ care?

LGBTQIA+ care is a personalized approach to healthcare which aims to eliminate specific barriers and address known health disparities among members of the LGBTQIA+ community.  Enhancing efforts to improve LGBTQIA+ healthcare are necessary to ensure that LGBTQIA+ individuals can lead long, healthy lives.  No matter how you identify, it is important for anyone with chest tissue, a vulva, uterus, cervix, ovaries, or vagina to have regular gynecological exams and screening.

What is an LGBTQIA+ physician ally?

An LGBTQIA+ physician ally is a healthcare provider who is supportive of inclusive care and actively advocates for LQBTQIA+ patients. They often have increased experience or training in caring for the LGBTQIA+ community.

Dr. Worley and Dr. Silva are compassionate physicians who are proud partners of 26Health and are affiliated with the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA). They follow the motto “Straight4Equality”.

What is your practice philosophy regarding the LGBTQIA+ community?

We believe healthcare should be inclusive, affirming, and available to all. That is why we have created a practice that makes every patient, regardless of who they love or how they identify, feel seen, heard, and cared for.

Dr. Worley and Dr. Silva understand the unique challenges and obstacles that members of the LGBTQIA+ community face, especially within the healthcare system. Our physicians are dedicated to ensuring that all individuals receive high-quality and compassionate care in a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment. Our goal is to normalize, validate, and establish trust with you. We believe that every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect and our physicians are committed to providing care in an unbiased and judgement-free setting.

What services are available for the LGBTQIA+ community?

Our physicians will ensure that you stay up-to-date with routine screening guidelines and provide individualized care based on your needs. Some of our services include:

  • gender inclusive/trans-sensitive wellness exams
  • pap smears
  • cancer screenings
  • STD testing
  • menstrual control and support
  • contraception
  • fertility support
  • prenatal care/delivery
  • treatment for gynecologic conditions
  • gender-affirming therapy
  • minimally invasive surgery

If you require a referral, we will ensure that you are seen by other LGBTQIA+ friendly specialists as needed.

How do you handle gender identity?

We want our patients to feel truly comfortable with us and we recognize that standard binary options (male/female) are not sufficient for everyone. We use inclusive and neutral language and offer gender-neutral bathrooms. While we have to ask for your legal name and assigned gender at birth for insurance purposes, we will also obtain information regarding your gender identity, pronouns, and name.  We note these in your chart at the time of your initial visit and are committed to using them always.

Do you offer transgender health services?

Yes! We believe that gender identity and sex assigned at birth can be different. When your body doesn’t match what you feel inside, that can be traumatizing. Your ability to live your life authentically is essential.  For transgender patients, the physicians at Alliance Obstetrics & Gynecology offer gender-affirming services and collaborate with other LGBTQIA+ friendly specialists including urologists and plastic surgeons as needed.

Can I obtain hormonal therapy?

In accordance with state legislation, we continue to support transgender and gender diverse patients over the age of 18. Only physicians are able to prescribe and manage medications related to hormone therapy. We regretfully are not able to provide telehealth visits for these services given current laws. As legislation continues to evolve, we will strictly abide by the regulations as we provide care to you.

Can I obtain gender-affirming surgery?

In accordance with state legislation, we continue to provide surgery to transgender and gender diverse patients over the age of 18 for a variety of reasons. We regretfully are not able to provide telehealth visits for appointments related to these services given current laws. As legislation continues to evolve, we will strictly abide by the regulations as we provide care to you.

Can you help my partner and I with pregnancy?

If you are ready to become a parent, Dr. Worley and Dr. Silva can help you with all your family planning needs. They can provide preconception counseling, fertility testing, ovulation induction, and intrauterine insemination (IUI).  Once you are pregnant, all of your prenatal care, ultrasounds, and delivery can continue with them!

If you require in vitro fertilization (IVF) or adoption help, we are able to refer you to LGBQTIA+ friendly specialists who can help you on your journey to parenthood.

What are some healthcare facts/statistics related to the LGBTQIA+ community?

According to healthcare studies, lesbian women:

  • are less likely than heterosexual women to seek healthcare
  • are less likely than heterosexual women to have a pap smear
  • are less likely to have STDs testing
  • are at increased risk of gynecological cancers due to reduced healthcare access, routine screening, or contraceptive use

For the transgender and gender queer community:

  • 51% are bullied or harassed in school
  • 61% are victims of physical assault
  • 64% are victims of sexual assault
  • 33% delay or avoid preventive care due to fear of discrimination
  • 48% delay or avoid medical care with sick/injured due to fear of discrimination
  • 41% have attempted suicide
  • 26% drugs or alcohol to cope with discrimination

Many of these disparities are faced by anyone who is part of a marginalized community. Daily stress caused by stigma and discrimination can lead to negative mental and physical health outcomes.  The team at Alliance Obstetrics & Gynecology are here to change that.
